How To Get Around New Places with a Wheelchair

How to get around new places with a wheelchair

As a person in a wheelchair, getting around new places is hard without good guidance and preparation. In this blog post, I'm going to discuss some things to consider when you go to a new place so that you can get around as easily as possible.

Transportation in new places

The most important thing to do before going somewhere with a wheelchair is to find out what wheelchair accessibility is like in that location. You can either call ahead or Google it. There are plenty of resources online, including this one: https://www.access-board.gov/tools-and-resources/publications/exterior-construction-and-alterations/accessible-parking
You can also contact organizations such as Disabled World for more information about wheelchair access when traveling.

Places around the world that are accessible to wheelchairs

Most wheelchair-accessible places are in the United States. However, you can also find them in Canada, India, and Europe. In the U.S., there are wheelchair-accessible paths in Washington DC, New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Tips and tricks for first-time wheelchair users

The first time you use a wheelchair, it might take some getting used to. You don't have as much control over the chair as you would your legs. Additionally, navigating tight spaces and steps can be difficult. Here are some tips for first-time wheelchair users:
- Make sure that the area is cleared of any obstacles.
- Try not to force the chair into tight spaces or stairs if it doesn't fit. It's better to avoid injury than risk damaging your chair.
- If you're looking for a specific direction, tap your brakes instead of turning them (this will happen automatically on most models). This will help you come to a gradual stop when necessary.
- Try standing up out of the chair now and then (make sure there are no obstructions in front of or behind you before doing so). This will loosen up your joints and give you a break from sitting down for too long.
- Always wear your seatbelt!

How to navigate public transit systems with a wheelchair

It can be difficult to navigate public transit systems if you have a mobility device, such as a wheelchair. Here are some of the tips for navigating public transit systems:
-Know where the wheelchair accessible routes are
-Use the elevator or escalator when possible
-Ask for help when needed
